Shannon Carver had the opportunity to sit down with SZ’s newest team member, Parker Eberhard. They discussed his background in architecture, and how Parker’s unique skill set led him to the position of SZ Build Construction Manager.
Where do you find inspiration? What inspires your work as an Architectural Designer / Construction Manager?
I am inspired to perform quality work. I have appreciation for well-designed and well-built spaces. Good design and poor design cost the same to construct; I enjoy using my knowledge and experience to plan thoughtful design and detailing. Additionally, I am inspired to build structures that will last, emphasizing the need for proper material selection.
What’s your educational background, how does it influence your work?
Graduated University of Cincinnati with a Bachelors and Masters of Architecture. I approach construction from the mind of an Architect. Managing the construction processes from the eyes of a designer allows execution of the vision and allows for quick building decisions, while holding to the design intent. There is a synergy of knowing what to design based on what can be built and vice versa.
What art do you most identify with?
Abstract and outsider art. Self-taught artists trying to make sense of the world with no agenda. Would love to own an Alex Katz piece.
As a multi-disciplinary professional, what work do you most enjoy doing?
As a people person I enjoy the design / build model as it allows for interacting with a variety of people from clients, designers, city officials, suppliers, subcontractors and more. I also enjoy space planning for maximizing efficiencies.
What superpower would you have and why?
Ability to put my kids to sleep, and keep them asleep through the night.
How does your love of cooking inspire your work in building creative environments?
Previously I have designed and built restaurants with a passion for kitchen design and focus on efficiency in commercial food environments. I see the importance of programmatic thoughtfulness during the design process.
How does collaboration come into play with your work? Why were you drawn to joining the SZ Design/Build Team?
The collaborative effort comes naturally with understanding that everyone has something unique to bring to the table. The liaison position between the design and construction teams plays to my strengths. Additionally, previously a colleague with Suzanne, I have respect for her leadership and Architectural eye. Also, as a new MI local I want to support our community members.
How do you make the Design/Build process enjoyable for both you and your client?
Supportive of the client by being an involved guide throughout their design / build project. It can be a scary and disruptive process, so I try to be as least intrusive to their lives as possible while being available to them. Having design and construction teams in house alleviates some of the redundant communications between Architect and GC. I support client visibility to the process and providing pricing early on to find efficiencies in value engineering.
