Meet Tommy Johnsen - Construction Project Manager

Last Fall, Tommy Johnsen joined SZ Design | Build, bringing a diverse set of skills as a Project Manager to our multi-disciplinary team. He has worked in construction, I.T., media, and emerging industries and is presently managing ~4MM in active construction projects with a total portfolio of ~6MM (including projects in design and warranty). His role focuses on estimating, scheduling, sub-contractor coordination, client relations and generally bringing SZ’s architectural & interior designs to life.

What’s the most exciting part of your job?

Building relationships with trade partners and having the opportunity to leverage those resources to accomplish complex building projects is an incredibly rewarding aspect of the work I do.

Design | Build Editorial by Parker Eberhard

When I tell people that I am the construction manager for a design-build company, the response that I frequently get is ‘What is design-build?’. A fair question to ask, my response is that design-build is one of the methods of designing and building a project where one company oversees both the design and construction of a project.

In the more ‘traditional’ method of working on a project, the client will first work with an architect or designer to create the design. There may be an initial discussion of the client’s construction budget for the project, but this isn’t necessarily considered throughout the design of the project.

Shannon Carver had the opportunity to sit down with SZ’s newest team member, Parker Eberhard. They discussed his background in architecture, and how Parker’s unique skill set led him to the position of SZ Build Construction Manager.

Where do you find inspiration? What inspires your work as an Architectural Designer / Construction Manager?

I am inspired to perform quality work. I have appreciation for well-designed and well-built spaces. Good design and poor design cost the same to construct; I enjoy using my knowledge and experience to plan thoughtful design and detailing. Additionally, I am inspired to build structures that will last, emphasizing the need for proper material selection.
