First Hill Residence, Mercer Island.
This is a fun one! This remodel resulted in a total transformation. The biggest challenge was to design a more spacious kitchen layout with optimal circulation flow multiple cooks in the family. The addition of a “dish-pit” in place of the old pantry allowed for two or more people to work in the kitchen without disruption, while meeting at the counter butcher block island counter by formology.
Clients Q & A :
What was the main driving force behind your decision to remodel?
We were interested in creating better flow and increasing the utility of the space. Importantly, we wanted to open up the kitchen and integrate the overall first level spaces more holistically. From a design perspective, we wanted to update the rooms including color palette, furnishings, appliances and fixtures.
Now that your remodel is complete, how has it impacted your family culture & lifestyle?
We love to cook and have family and friends over. The kitchen is the center of our social time and now we can truly enjoy it!
We believe the key to a successful interior remodel lies not only in the details & specifications, but also in well organized space-planning. How was your experience in teaming with SZ in exploring creative & thoughtful design solutions?
SZ brought a fresh, new approach and design we could not have imagined ourselves. From the vision to the specifics (and many options/decisions) around fixtures, counter tops, tile, color - SZ brought it together for us.
Would you recommend SZ to your friends considering their own remodel? If so, why?
Yes - especially for those who need a lot of guidance through an overwhelming number of choices and details. There are so many considerations, and we depended upon the expertise of SZ to lead us through the design process.
2. Parkwood Residence, Mercer Island.
After several years of searching for their family home on Mercer Island, our clients (and dear friends) finally found their very own diamond in the rough. This three-story ‘60s home needed a little TLC to better express their modern aesthetic, while meeting the more open-plan lifestyle of this family of five (six, counting their adorable husky).
The SZ design team approached the design knowing that the Kitchen/Dining is the heart of this family’s home. Maximizing views from the Kitchen and locating the Dining Room along the window wall resulted in a treehouse vibe for all to enjoy. The new TV room also provides a space for movies, another place for the family to be together.
3. Fir Lane Residence, Mercer Island.
After recently moving up from California, our clients rented a home on Mercer Island keeping their eyes open for a family home to buy. With three young children in tow, they landed on a wonderful home quietly nestled on Fir Lane on the South-end. It had everything going for it, except for an awkward flow that needed to be addressed. SZ presented our clients with short-term & long-term designs that meet their needs upon move-in and beyond.

Q & A :
What was the main driving force behind your decision to remodel?
We have lived in our house for 18 years and recently renovated/updated all of the rooms in our house accept two bathrooms and we used SZ Build for that project – you could say we saved the best for last.
Now that your remodel is complete, how has it impacted your family culture & lifestyle?
We put off remodeling the bathrooms because we knew it would be very disruptive and expensive, however, we have no regrets because the remodel project worked out as planned and we are pleased to be enjoying the finished product.
We believe the key to a successful interior remodel lies not only in the details & specifications, but also in well organized space-planning. How was your experience in teaming with SZ in exploring creative & thoughtful design solutions?
We were pretty clear on what we wanted from the beginning and we were able to rely on SZ to assist with managing through the structural issues, permitting issues, and the various small issues that come with any remodel project.
Construction can be disruptive & stressful, but SZ Build strives to make the process collaborative, adaptive and, dare we say, fun! Did we succeed in your experience?
Hard to say it was “fun” to undertake a remodel but we can say the SZ team worked with us to be as least disruptive as possible; we were very comfortable with the SZ team being in our house for several weeks, they took good care of us, and were thoughtful about our needs throughout the project.
Would you recommend SZ to your friends considering their own remodel? If so, why?
Yes, we would and already have recommended SZ to friends and neighbors. All projects have their surprises, changes, and issues – the SZ team faced into the issues with us and helped us to get them resolved so we could get our project done in a timely manner with the results we wanted.
